What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a natural compound derived from the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa) that has emerged as one of the most exciting ingredients in skincare in recent years. It does not contain intoxicating properties, but it has many skin-soothing effects. CBD oil is increasingly used in natural cosmetics due to its versatile properties.

The plant's long history in brief

The story of CBD goes back thousands of years, when hemp was cultivated for its fibers, seeds, and natural extracts. CBD itself was discovered in the 1940s, but its potential was forgotten for decades when the entire plant was labeled a drug. The discovery of the endocannabinoid system in the 1990s changed everything and opened our eyes to the diverse effects of CBD, from skin care to balancing the body and mind.

Today, CBD is used all over Europe as a dietary supplement, to support well-being and in some countries also for medicinal purposes. At Nordic Farma, we combine full-spectrum CBD extract with organic MCT oil, in a clean, safe and sustainable way. Our goal is to take the field of natural cosmetics and well-being to the next level and bring the benefits of this unique raw material within everyone's reach.

Legislation

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound derived from the hemp plant. An important distinction: CBD comes from hemp, not cannabis, these are two completely different plants from the same plant family. CBD does not cause intoxication and is not psychoactive.

In Europe, CBD is widely used for well-being. In Germany, France, the Netherlands and most EU countries, CBD oils are sold for internal use, for example to improve sleep quality, manage stress and support concentration. CBD is also used to relieve pain and control inflammatory reactions.

Finland is one of the last EU countries where CBD is not allowed to be sold for internal use. Finland's current policy is contrary to the decision of the EU Court of Justice. In our country, CBD is supervised by three authorities: Fimea (medicinal products), the Finnish Food Authority (food supplements) and Tukes (cosmetics). For now, CBD can only be legally sold as cosmetics.

In practice: CBD skincare is completely legal in Finland. Products intended for internal use are ordered from the EU in accordance with free trade rules. The situation is developing, but slowly.

CBD and skincare

CBD offers amazing benefits for all skin types. CBD affects the skin’s endocannabinoid system, which regulates many skin functions. This explains why one ingredient can help with so many conditions. Reducing inflammatory reactions is CBD’s main strength. Irritated skin calms down faster and returns to balance naturally.

The advantage of CBD is its versatility: the same ingredient works for dry, oily, and sensitive skin. The research results speak for themselves, and positive effects are seen in both acute problems and long-term maintenance of skin condition.

CBD is a sensitive skin's best friend. It soothes irritated skin and is suitable for daily use. CBD prevents unnecessary inflammatory reactions and helps the skin react more appropriately to external factors.

Both are chronic inflammatory skin conditions where the skin produces too many inflammatory factors. CBD breaks this inflammatory cycle on multiple levels.

In atopy, CBD repairs damage to the skin's protective layer and reduces the penetration of allergens. It suppresses the overreaction of the immune system and significantly reduces itching. CBD slows down the rapid cell renewal of psoriasis by affecting the cell division process.

CBD works as both an acute treatment and a maintenance treatment. Unlike cortisone, CBD can be used long-term.

Acne and excessive oiliness occur when the skin produces too much sebum and the pores become clogged. CBD balances the skin's oil production and reduces inflammation.

CBD soothes irritated pores and reduces the inflammatory response caused by bacteria. It naturally regulates sebum production without over-drying, reducing both shine and blemishes. CBD's anti-inflammatory properties reduce redness and speed up the skin's healing process.

Unlike many acne treatments, CBD does not disrupt the skin's natural balance. It works on inflammatory acne, blackheads, and general oiliness, and is also suitable for sensitive skin.

Skin aging is caused by free radical damage, collagen loss, and slowed cell turnover. CBD combats these aging processes naturally.

CBD’s powerful antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals before they can damage skin’s structural components. It stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which keep skin supple and smooth. CBD also speeds up cell turnover and improves the skin’s ability to repair itself.

Dry skin needs a boost from within. CBD supports the skin’s natural moisture-regulating mechanisms by strengthening the barrier and helping to reduce moisture loss. Its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties relieve the irritation and itching of dry skin, while giving the skin a better chance of maintaining its elasticity and softness.
